Richard Bugbee

Climate Leadership Awardee

The Climate Leadership Award is presented to Richard Bugbee for his exemplary service as the inaugural Tribal Elder in the Elders' Indigenous Climate Fellowship during 2020-2021. Mr. Bugbee, a dedicated Payoomkawichum (Juaneño/Luiseño) Indian with strong ties to Indigenous communities throughout the region, brought invaluable guidance, wisdom, and expertise to the Climate Science Alliance team. His role was instrumental in advancing projects and initiatives that bolster Tribal resilience in southern California. Richard played a pivotal role in providing direction to the Climate Science Alliance Tribal Working Group and facilitating the launch of the Resilient Restoration Vision group. His contributions extended to advising on Tribal Resilience Projects, including plant lists, Stewardship Pathways plant propagation training, seed gathering, storage, and cultural plant uses. Richard Bugbee's commitment to preserving Indigenous knowledge, language and connecting it with the youth exemplifies exceptional leadership in promoting Tribal wisdom and environmental resilience.
