On August 18th, the California Regional Environmental Education Community (CREEC) hosted a Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) workshop for informal educators in San Diego. This interactive workshop led by CREEC Region Coordinator, Crystal Howe, covered environmental literacy and NGSS integration for informal educators. Not only did the workshop cover how to use NGSS, it also explained its history and purpose, which helped to set the stage for implementation. After learning about the framework of NGSS, participants had the opportunity to work through a hands-on science activity that exemplified the teaching goals of NGSS. The morning closed with an open discussion about the opportunities and challenges that informal educators experience within their own programs.

This interactive workshop was extremely helpful in preparing informal educators to take the lead in NGSS implementation in our region. The Alliance looks forward to attending more CREEC workshops in the future!

Crystal Howe will be hosting two more NGSS workshops for informal educators in December and March. For more information on upcoming workshops, contact Crystal Howe at crystal@creec.org.
