Celebrating CA Native American Day at the unveiling of “Return of the Kumeyaay Creator” sculpture at SDSU

The Climate Science Alliance team alongside our partners from the SDSU CNNCTS team celebrated California Native American Day at the unveiling of  “Return of the Kumeyaay Creator” by Johnny Bear Contreras.

The Climate Science Alliance team alongside our partners from the San Diego State University (SDSU) Collaborative of Native Nations for Climate Transformation and Stewardship (CNNCTS) team celebrated California Native American Day on September 27, 2024 at the unveiling of “Return of the Kumeyaay Creator”. This stunning sculpture created by Johnny Bear Contreras serves as the latest piece in his series “the Living Land Acknowledgement”, a sculptural art project at SDSU that aims to share the story of the Kumeyaay people and their continued presence on campus and in the region. Johnny Bear spoke about the work at the unveiling celebration and shared how “Each ray of the sun represents a generation,” he said.

These are all just different aspects of our life that has been, that is and (that’ll) be the future.”

The Climate Science Alliance team feels so lucky to have Johnny Bear join as an Advisor in the coming year and we look forward to the good work ahead.
