Thank you to the Pauma Band of Mission Indians and Pauma Tribal Farms for inviting us to share climate change adaptation resources at the 5K Earth Day event! The beautiful weather and views made for a perfect place to run and a perfect place to talk about all the things we can do to be good stewards of the Earth.
Climate Science Alliance enjoyed a wonderful day chatting with attendees and vendors at the Pauma Tribal Farms 5K Earth Day event on April 20th, 2024.
The event started out strong with the 5K runners zooming around the perimeter of the farm and enjoying their run in the crisp morning air! We choose to cheer the runners on from the sidelines while sipping coffees. After the run, everyone enjoyed delicious foods and nourishing conversation.
We talked to attendees about environmental stewardship and specifically Indigenous fire stewardship. We played our new educational game Up, Down, & All Around: the Pathway to Good Fire, as a way to talk about the relationship that plants and animals in Southern California have with fire and the ways that we can be good fire stewards. This game can be checked out and used by educators as a part of our newest educational resource, the Climate Science & Fire Traveling Trunk.
At our table attendees had the opportunity to sign up to learn more about the conservation strategy being written for the Southern Montane Forests, and make sure their voice is heard in the conversation about how to best manage those forests. While the younger attendees could enjoy our new Plant Relatives of the Southern California Desert coloring book, take a sticker, or enjoy the giveaways donated by CLIF Bar and Dr. Bronner’s.
The Climate Science Alliance awarded Pauma Tribal Farms with a small grant to support the purchasing of t-shirts and banners, and provide honoraria for Elders and cultural presenters. The Alliance team also donated a tote bag full of environmental stewardship children's books from the Climate Kids’ Book Club program for the raffle, and was excited to share that resource with the raffle winner!
A big thank you to Pauma Band of Mission Indians and Pauma Tribal Farms for hosting us and for creating such a wonderful Earth Day event!
