The Climate Science Alliance teamed up with the Noyo Center for Marine Science to present an interactive workshop about educator resources on wildland fire and sea level rise for 35+ participants at the California Association of Science Educators Conference held in Sacramento this past November. Attendees explored the new Climate Science and Fire Traveling Trunk and contributed to the development of our upcoming resource—the Sea Level Rise Traveling Trunk. Learn more about the workshop and these two educator resources on today’s blog!

The Climate Science Alliance was excited to present the ‘Teaching Climate Change Topics Through Hands-On Science, Storytelling and Art’ workshop to 35+ educators at the California Association of Science Educators on November 8, 2024 in Sacramento, California. Climate Science Alliance staff, Jeanette Starpine, and Alliance partner from the Noyo Center for Marine Science, Reesha Katcher, led a 1.5 hour workshop that consisted of interactive, hands-on activities for participants to engage with educational resources designed to teach climate change topics to K-12 students.

Starpine and Katcher focused on impacts and solutions important in California including new Climate Kids resources to teach about wildland fire and sea level rise. Attendees were introduced to the Climate Science and Fire Traveling Trunk resource and were given a chance to provide feedback on the development of activities that will be a part of the Sea Level Rise Traveling Trunk.
The workshop started by having attendees participate in the Carbon Cycle Game that is included in the Climate Change Primer portion of all the Climate Kids Traveling Trunks. After this game, the workshop was split into two groups. One group engaged with the Climate Science and Fire Traveling Trunk activities including the Fire Friends and Followers Identification activity and the Pathway to Good Fire Game. The other group tested out and provided feedback on the in development Sound of Sea Level Rise activity that is a part of the NASA Sea Level Education, Awareness and Literacy project. The groups then had the chance to swap and experience the other activity. At the end of the workshop participants completed evaluation forms.

It was a wonderful opportunity to get to share these resources with science educators from all around California. Thank you to those who attended, to our partners at the Noyo Center for Marine Science and to the whole NASA Sea Level Education, Awareness and Literacy project team.
