Climate Science and Fire Traveling Trunk Educator Training at the Back Bay Science Center

The Fire Traveling Trunk is now available for check out at the Back Bay Science Center. On the 19th of November 2024, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Climate Science Alliance hosted a training to share about this new educational tool that focuses on the importance of wildfire in California ecosystems. With the good company of 15 educators working in different fields, this training was an amazing environment filled with learning and good conversation.

A room with tables arranged around the room, in the centre several blue chairs lined up in front of a screen. There are various people standing and chatting around the room which contains a green metal structure on the ceiling, a blue floor girding and different specimens of birds and sea animals on the walls.

The Climate Kids “Climate Science and Fire” Traveling Trunk is a new resource that explores the impacts of climate change on wildland fire, identifies fire as an essential component of the Southern California ecosystems, and discusses the role of Indigenous fire stewardship and efforts to bring good fire back to the land. Using hands-on science, storytelling and art, the trunk contains a variety of activities and materials for educators to share with their students, and can be adapted for grades K-12.

In the afternoon of 19 November 2024, Jeanette Starpine, Director of Education and Engagement at the Climate Science Alliance, co-hosted a training session with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) at the Back Bay Science Center located on Acjachemen and Tongva Lands in Newport Beach, California. By hosting the Climate Science and Fire Traveling Trunk, the Back Bay Science Center becomes a new location where educators can access this resource and bring it into their classrooms.

The training began with a presentation where educators learned more about fire, as well as its cultural and environmental significance. Jeanette then explained more about the activities that are part of the trunk and how it can be used. The different activities and materials were displayed around the room where the teachers had the chance to explore and familiarise themselves with each one.

The training ended with good conversations and reflections on the materials and was a valuable opportunity to connect and create a new space for this Traveling Trunk.

Thanks to Robin Madrid and Nann Nuon for hosting us at the Back Bay Science Center, and to CDFW for all their support with this event.
